MCP Accomplishments

Child Welfare Redesign and the CFS Mini-Grant Program.

In the summer of 2003, the Contra Costa Children and Family Services department staff worked with the NATs to conduct 500 community surveys as a part of the Child Welfare Redesign Process. The NAT surveyors exceeded the target number, conducting 600 surveys and delivering high quality information to the agency in record time. The resident surveyors identified a number of new potential foster parents, so more children in foster care can stay in their neighborhoods. As a result, Children & Family Services has developed a Mini-Grant Program, which provides funding for resident-driven projects that solve community problems.

Monument Health Fair.

Four years ago, health providers and the NATs initiated MCP's Annual Multi-Cultural Health Fair. In 2004, over 1500 low income and minority parents, children and seniors received basic health screenings and appropriate referrals.

Mobile Health Clinic.

In 2000, John Muir / Mount Diablo Health System and Contra Costa County Health Services Department worked in collaboration with the NATs to plan and launch the highly popular Mobile Health Clinic, which serves some of the hardest-to-reach residents in the Monument community. Based on community-identified priorities, the Clinic provides dental care for children and timely primary health care for adults and children that allows low income children to participate equally in school sports activities.

The Storytime Reading Project.

Run entirely by volunteers from the Senior Action Team, who read to Latino children in English, and teach ESL to day laborers. This has become a program of the First Five Center.

Monument Futures.

With the leadership of the NATs, the Day Labor Center has been transformed into Monument Futures, a community-driven economic development center offering culturally and educationally appropriate workforce development, asset development and business development opportunities to the community.

Local Transportation Redesign.

Seniors and other residents collaborating with City, County and nonprofit transportation agencies to redesign the Monument's inadequate public transportation services.

San Francisco Foundation Koshland Awards.

NATs and other MCP members received the San Francisco Foundation Koshland Awards in 2003 for outstanding community leadership.
