City of Concord Redevelopment Agency
Monument Boulevard Urban Design Plan and Design Guidelines
Information

What is it?
This will be the first Redevelopment Project for the Monument Boulevard Corridor. It will study
existing conditions and provide design recommendations to enhance pedestrian and bicycle safety,
improve sidewalks and crosswalks, recommend lighting and streetscape design, and improve the overall
safety and aesthetics of the Corridor. The four components of this project will be: an Urban Design
Plan, a Capital Improvement Plan, Design Guidelines, and Community Input. This project was
approved on July 24, 2007, and will be an essential element of a future Redevelopment Strategic Plan.
The City of Concord Redevelopment Agency approved a consulting agreement with Field Paoli, a San
Francisco-based architectural and urban design firm, to develop the Urban Design Plan and Design
Guidelines for the Monument Boulevard Corridor.
How is this being funded?
This particular project, which will take place during the next year, is being funded by the City of
Concord Redevelopment Agency.
In addition to this project, the City of Concord received two grants in 2006 from the Metropolitan
Transportation Commission (MTC) and Contra Costa Transit Authority, to address pedestrian safety
issues and upgrade the Monument Boulevard Corridor. These grants along with Community
Development Block Grant (CDBG) funding will be used for improvement projects on the Corridor.
When will the work start?
The initial meetings will begin in August 2007. Once the overall vision of the corridor has been
approved by the Redevelopment Agency Board, Field Paoli will prepare the Urban Design Plan, Capital
Improvement Plan and Design Guidelines. The entire study is anticipated to take one year to complete.
How can I get involved?
This is an exciting time for the Monument Boulevard Corridor, so do get involved! Input from all
members of the Monument Boulevard Corridor community will be key to developing the Urban Design
Plan and the overall vision for future redevelopment. All interested stakeholders should attend the
Community Forums that will be scheduled during the next year.
